about

Kya was written in the same year that Scelsi composed his Quattro pezzi per orchestra (ciascuno su una nota solo), a work cited again and again as one of the paradigmatic examples of Scelsi's own genuine music. The master and the aims that Scelsi sets for himself in this latter piece with respect to concentration on the smallest nuances of tone and sound in all their components (pitch, color, articulation) and transitions (e.g., the layering of pulsation - vibrato - quarter tone) and unfolds in it are also contained in Kya. Unlike the above-mentioned orchestral piece, Kya's three movements are not marked by rigorous limitation to a single note each but represent a very specific combination of monodic-horizontal processes and on the vertical plane of a microtonal harmony. The clarinet plays a leading role as a quasi-incantatory solo instrument in its formulation and steering of these processes on the horizontal plane. All Scelsi's accomplishments in the way of quarter tones, glissandi, vibrato styles, and figuration in his earlier solo pieces find their way in concentrated form into the clarinet part.
